Why Are My Succulents Dying? Common Problems & Fixes

Succulents are known for being low-maintenance, but that doesn’t mean they’re indestructible. If your once-thriving plant is looking a little sad, you’re not alone. Many new (and even experienced) plant owners ask the same question: “Why is my succulent dying?”

The good news? Most succulent problems come from a few simple mistakes that are easy to fix. Let’s walk through the most common issues and how to save your plant.

1. Overwatering

The #1 succulent killer. Too much water causes root rot, mushy leaves, and a plant that looks like it’s melting.

How to Fix It:

  • Let soil dry out completely before watering again.

  • Always use pots with drainage holes.

  • Switch to a cactus/succulent soil mix if you’re using standard potting soil.

2. Underwatering

Succulents don’t like soggy soil, but they still need water! If leaves are shriveled, crispy, or falling off, your plant may be thirsty.

How to Fix It:

  • Use the soak and dry method: water deeply, then let soil dry out.

  • Increase watering slightly during active growing seasons (spring/summer).

3. Not Enough Light

If your succulent looks “stretched out” (a condition called etiolation), it’s reaching for more sunlight.

How to Fix It:

  • Place your succulent in a bright, sunny window (south or east-facing is best).

  • If indoors with limited sun, consider a grow light.

4. Wrong Pot or Soil

Succulents in pots without drainage or soil that holds too much moisture will struggle.

How to Fix It:

  • Use terracotta or ceramic pots with drainage holes.

  • Stick to a well-draining succulent or cactus soil mix.

5. Pests & Diseases

Mealybugs, fungus gnats, and spider mites sometimes attack succulents.

How to Fix It:

  • Remove pests with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab.

  • Use neem oil or insecticidal soap if infestation persists.

  • Keep air flowing around your plants to prevent mold and fungus.

Final Thoughts

Succulents are resilient, and with a few quick fixes, your plant can bounce back. The key is balance—not too much water, not too little light, and the right soil to keep roots happy.
